Digital Literacy Narrative
As a student who is taking a 200-level college course on emerging media and rhetoric, you’re already a rather digitally-literate person: you wouldn’t have gotten to this point otherwise. This assignment asks you to reflect on and to reflect through multiliteracies how you have become digitally literate and to communicate your strengths as a consumer and producer of digital texts.
You’ve undoubtedly had important experiences using digital technologies that continue, in some way, to inform your current digital practices. Now, you’re being asked to reflect on those foundational experiences and create a text that documents and shares one or more of them. In short, your exigence is the need to understand better the past in order to show the way it’s shaped your current practices.
If you’re unsure where to begin, you might start by looking back at your list of important experiences with digital technologies, including the important details that mark those experiences as memorable (in good and/or bad ways).
Select the moment or set of connected moments that tells the most interesting and insightful narrative about your digital literacy journey.
Upon selecting your two or three moments of digital literacy, you will consider the possible ways to use narrative, analysis, and images to communicate how you arrived at the particular literacies you bring to this course.
In a series of three-ten images, document your literacy moments and include with each image, the story and analysis of how these experiences shaped you. What skills did you learn? How did you learn them? What types of social, critical, multimodal, visual, and traditional literacies did you gain? Use our readings to help you make use of vocabularies we’ve learned if it helps your thinking. Get creative, be silly, think substantively!
